Interesting facts about Ukrainian baseball
- The first games of the Ukrainian Championship and Cup took place in the Soviet Union, alongside with the Federal baseball championship. By the way, three Ukrainian clubs were among the eight major league teams of the first USSR baseball championship that was held in 1989;
- The first Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic championship that took place in 1990 and was a separate championship of all Ukrainian teams which played in higher leagues and the first Union championship. It was a part of the Summer Ukrainian Games. Among the participants there were “Bytovyk” team, Higher Kyiv Sport School (today it is” Alliance” team), baseball clubs from Odessa, Simferopol, Illichivsk, Lugansk, Chernivtsi, Beregovo. The prize for winners of the first championship was the first Team Cup and 15 figurines for each player. Figurines were produced in Canada on order of the Ukrainian diaspora representatives. These trophies were won by baseball players of “Photons” team (Simferopol) which beat Kyiv “Bytovyk” team out in the final;
- Ukrainian baseball teams two times ranked second places during the European Championships. In 2008 it was the National team U-12; in 2012 – U-21 team;
- There were two main coaches of the National Baseball Team: Victor Pyanykh (European Championship 1995) and Oleg Boiko (European Championships 1997, 2001, 2005, 2007);
- During the debut international tournament, American Vasyl Tarasko was the coach of the Ukrainian national team. He also was the first head coach of the junior team in the early 1990;
Several years ago, Vasyl Tarasko shared his memories about how he became the head coach of the Ukrainian national team: “During the Soviet Union championship in Moscow the “Red Devils” baseball team was trained by the American trainer. When he returned to America, the newspaper published his address to coaches to come to the Soviet Union in order to promote and develop baseball there.
My parents are of Ukrainian origin. They immigrated to America when I was 5 years old. And when I read these words in the newspaper I realized that I must help Ukraine. I wrote a letter to the Federal Sport Committee that I want to share own baseball knowledges and skills. “I know the language, like local food, drink vodka a little…” I wrote it, and most of all, thanks to my knowledge of the Ukrainian language I was chosen among more than 60 applicants. But I did not have a chance to work in Moscow; when I got to know that there is a baseball team in Kiev, I immediately went to Ukraine. I worked only six weeks with the Kyiv “Pobutovets” team after Soviet breakup. Then I came back to the United States, and decided that now (during that times) sport would be paid very little attention and money…
In 1993, Valerii Borzov who was the Minister of Sports, invited me to come back to Ukraine, and offered the post of head coach of a junior team. Next year the team held its first international match – in fact, it was the first game of the very first Ukrainian team – in the frameworks of the European Championship, Division “B” we beat Austrians. The score was 8:5. During the tournament, Ukrainian juniors took the third place. Then I worked with the senior team. In 1994 in Slovenia the national team of Ukraine took the first place in Division “B”, and in 1995 – team for the first time played in “A” group, with the strongest teams of the continent. In 1995 there was European Championship, which was qualifying for the Summer Olympic Games 1996. The team took the 9th place …”
- Three times the Ukrainian baseball team won bronze medals during European championships;
- During the period of Ukrainian independence, four teams won Ukraine Cup: these are Kyiv, Illichivsk, Kirovograd, and Simferopol teams;
- Five times Ukrainian teams played the global level competitions. Three times baseball players took part in the World Series tournaments (“Little League”), two times Ukrainian Cadets baseball players have played the World Championships U-16;
- Six times Ukrainian teams were disqualified because of having won the qualifiers for the European Championships, they did not come to the championship due to the lack of funding;
- To participate in the official baseball matches players must have a certain equipment which consists of at least seven compulsory elements: spike shoes, knee-breeches,
- Jersey cloth (shows team membership), baseball bat, helmet, baseball glove and fitted hat;
- Eight times Ukrainian clubs (from Kirovograd and Simferopol) won the qualifying tournaments of various European Cup games;
- Eight Ukrainian teams represented country during the major league of Ukraine baseball championship;
- Nine players from each team play on the field. Matches consist of nine innings;
- The most award-winning Ukrainian baseball club is “KNTU-Elizavetgrad” (Kirovograd city). It is a multiple winner of the Ukraine Cup.
