Israel has won the opener of the 2017 World Baseball Classic. In a historic upset the WBC Qualifier winner from Brooklyn beat the 2008 Olympic Champion Korea 2-1 in 10 innings on Monday at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea.
A bases loaded walk in the first by Tyler Krieger plated Nate Freiman to give Israel a 1-0 advantage. However, Korea came back and tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth thanks to a RBI single by Geon Chang Seo.
Korea looked to beat Israel in the eighth, but Josh Zeid pitched out off a one-out, runners on the corners situation to keep his team in the game and eventually forcing extra innings. In the tenth it was a RBI single by Scott Burcham, which broke the tie.
