Baseball Australia announced major changes to its flagship, the Australian Baseball League, on the eve of opening day in the ABL. The Australian Baseball League is looking to expand from currently six to eight teams for the 2018/2019 season.

After that announcement, it got known that Baseball New Zealand got offered a spot on the short list for the expansion. The ABL team in New Zealand would be placed in Auckland. A ballpark still needs to be built, but a possible spot in the ABL probably would help to find the funding.

The eighth season of the Australian Baseball League is slated to start this coming weekend.
