Baseball field in Greece dedicated in honor of boy who died of brain tumor
Greece, N.Y. (WHAM) – Better baseball games are being played in Greece this week, thanks to a new field.
The Derech Hatorah School dedicated ‘Gavi Field’ on Tuesday. The field was named in honor of a young man who was a huge sports fan.
Gavriel Springut died of a brain tumor after about 18 months of fighting it. His father, Jeff Springut, said he can’t think of a better way to remember and honor his son.
“We miss him every day,” Springut said. “But even if he were still here with us today, we would be doing this in his honor, not in his memory. This is Gavi all the way.”
Jeff said the dedication could not have happened on a better day. There was beautiful weather and, most importantly, it was a big day for the World Series.
He said Gavi would be rooting for the Chicago Cubs…but only because the Yankees are not playing in the World Series this year.
